Let’s continue in our study of being blessed by drawing nearer to God through the reading of His word.
Psalm 119:9-11 NASB How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word. With all my heart I have sought You; Do not let me wander from Your commandments. Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You.
The Bible says the way to stay pure is by living according to God’s word. We are guided to hide His word in our hearts. Don’t stray from Him. I have strayed before myself. I have tried to fill that God-shaped hole with so many things. Drugs, alcohol and sexual promiscuity were some but let me tell you one thing. Yes, some of those things were pleasurable for a while but none of them lasted. Mostly all of that garbage left me feeling empty, unfulfilled, lonely and depressed, not to mention guilty.
Then enter one Jesus and my life is full, secure, happy and worth living. He alone can fill the emptiness inside of us. We can try to fill it with other temporary pleasures but in the end they leave us empty. So don’t wander from Him. There is nothing in this world better than a relationship with the Lord. He alone can heal, forgive, restore and bless beyond measure His children. Today if you hear his voice harden not your heart but come to Him. All you who are weak and heavy burdened, come to Him. Come and find perfect rest.
What does the word of God say pertaining to purity? We are to abstain from the very appearance of evil. (1 Thessalonians 5:32) Abstain defined is restrain oneself from doing or enjoying something. Hebrews 11:25 Paul says Moses chose to suffer affliction with the people of God then to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. There may be suffering from abstaining but in the end it will be worth it. The present sufferings are nothing compared to the glory that will be revealed in us. (Romans 8:18) Heaven is our aim and home. We need to abstain (refrain from) doing anything that would not be pleasing in God’s eyes. It is time to walk the walk and talk the talk, so to speak. Do not be hearers of the word and not doers. (James 1:22) Let the word of God speak to our hearts today. Let’s read more about purity.
1 Corinthians 6:18 NIV Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.
Colossians 3:5 NIV Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.
Hebrews 13:4 NASB Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge.
How do we maintain that purity? We think about things that are pure, honest, true and good (Philippians 4:8) Jesus said if a man even looks at a woman with lust in his eyes that he has already committed adultery in his heart. (Matthew 5:28) So get away from it, change the radio station, turn the TV channel, leave the conversation and do something else instead. We could meditate on God’s word, turn on a Christian movie or even go to YouTube and listen to Tim Hawkins or any other Christian comedian or Christian singer. We have music choices of rock, contemporary, rap or country with all genres having Christian artists. There are many ways to walk in a way that’s pleasing to the Lord. His ways and laws aren’t grievous. (1 John 5:3)
If there is any particular sin you are struggling with (we all struggle or have struggled at some point) take it to the Lord. He can and will help with anything. Our God is good. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. (Philippians 4:13) That’s another promise in His word. So dig in, find some promises that you can lean on today. Be blessed as you walk in the freedom of His love.
You are so great, full of mercy and compassion. We, Your children, come to You today seeking Your guidance in the area of purity. Help us to keep our minds (thoughts) and hearts (motives) fixed on You and Your word. Give us strength and a desire to meditate on Your word. We need to digest Your word so we can abstain from anything that would separate us from You. We know all sin separates us from You (Isaiah 59:2). Lord, we don’t want anything coming between us and our relationship with You. Your word is our light, strength and power. There is nothing You cannot do, so, Lord, we humbly come before Your throne, asking for Your grace. If we have sinned in any way I ask that You would forgive us. Help us to forgive ourselves and to make the right choices next time. Enable us to go and sin no more. When any temptation comes before us help us, to take it to Your feet and, turn from it immediately. We commit our bodies and lives to Your Lordship. May Your will be done in and through us. We, Your children, need You. Thank You Lord. In Jesus’ name.
