The Ten Commandments

Sometimes to answer questions I like to dive in to the who, what, when, where and why? Who was entrusted with the Ten Commandments? What are they? When were they given?  Where were they written? Why were they given? After we discuss each one of these questions, we will look at each commandment in its entirety. So this will be 11 blogs to reach the ending. It is my hope to shed some light on this part of God’s word and why it is so important to us today.

Let’s start with the who. Moses was given the ten commandments after God wrote them. God wrote them with His very own finger! He decided to help, guide and direct His people. These were His instructions on living penned by the very finger of God! They were written the second time by Moses after he broke the first set that God actually wrote Himself.

What are the Ten Commandments? They were a list of the morals and values that were a code of conduct for the people of God.

When were the Ten Commandments written? After Israel was freed from slavery in Egypt.

Where were the Ten Commandments written?  On the top of Mount Sinai.

Why were the Ten Commandments given? They were given for our well being, for a good, solid foundation and to remind us of our own sinfulness.

So where are the Ten Commandments  in the New Testament?

First Commandment, Matthew 6:24 Jesus says that we can only serve God.

Second Commandment, Ephesians 5:5 Paul teaches that those who worship idols will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Third Commandment, Matthew 5:33-37 Jesus teaches that our word should be our bond. To swear by God or anything else comes from “the evil one.”

Fourth Commandment, Mark 2:27-28 Jesus said the Sabbath was made for man and that He is Lord of the Sabbath.

Fifth Commandment, Matthew 15:4 Jesus said Honor your father and your mother, he that curses them to die the death.

Sixth Commandment, Matthew 19:18 Jesus spoke directly not to murder.

Seventh Commandment, Matthew 19:18 Jesus spoke directly not to commit adultery.

Eighth Commandment,  Matthew 19:18 Jesus spoke directly you shall not steal.

Ninth Commandment, Matthew 19:18  Another one that Jesus spoke directly about. You shall not bear false witness.

Tenth Commandment,  Romans 13:9 Paul teaches this command directly. You shall not covet.

How do the Ten Commandments apply to us today? How can we do what is right, if we do not know what is right? Why do you think that satan is trying to get God out of America?, out of our schools?, off of our money?, out of our courts by removing the 10 Commandments from government buildings? Knowledge is power! Look at babies when they are born. They do nothing except cry, drink milk and need diaper changes…When we are born into Christ we have to grow in the Lord. We are like babies and we need to desire the meat of the word. My question is, how are we going to grow if we do not read His word? That is another good reason to open the word of God.

Hosea 4:6 NLT My people are being destroyed because they don’t know Me. Since you priests refuse to know Me, I refuse to recognize you as My priests. Since you have forgotten the laws of your God, I will forget to bless your children.

Destroyed…. do you see the concern in our Father’s eyes? He so wants us to know Him. Think of the Ten Commandments like a guide. If we have direction but we don’t use it, what good is it? That same truth is the same for a compass. If we do not know which way is north, south, east or west, how will we get where we want to without direction? Even a map, if we don’t follow the path we won’t get to our destination. Heaven is a believers home. The Bible is our roadmap. We need to know what the map says and where we are to go. To follow is to be blessed. The Ten Commandments of the Old Testament were still taught in the New Testament and are still much needed as a moral compass for today. God said if we follow His commands that we will be blessed in our going, coming and our children will be blessed. (Deuteronomy 28:1-14) It is time to get our priorities in order. In the next ten days we will delve into them one a day.

Father,

You are awesome and holy. Who is there like You? There is none! You are amazing. You actually wrote with Your finger on a stone. No earthy being could do the things You have done for Your people. You are good Lord. You love us so much that You even wanted to share a code of conduct, with us. You wanted to give us direction. The Ten Commandments are not hard to understand or follow. They are for our own safety and instruction. Thank You for Your great love. Prepare our hearts to understand more about Your commandments and to honor You by letting Your word transform our hearts and minds. (Romans 12:2) Write on our hearts Your Ten Commandments as we bow at Your feet. We love You and want to do Your will for our lives. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

  1. Fabulous! I have never had anyone point out where the Ten Commandments are in the New Testament!

  2. I love how you’ve pointed out where the commandments are to be found in the New Testament. Some people are under the misapprehension that the laws of the Old Testament are irrelevant once Jesus came, but these were his laws too and God’s laws will always stand. I’m looking forward to delving deeper into each individual commandment in further posts.

Donna, I always thought your name was Donna Marie … where did I get the ‘Marie’ from? Have I dreamt it? lol

    1. My name is Donna Marie Nielsen. No dreaming lol. It is my middle name. I don’t use it a lot but when I was praying to the Lord I felt compelled to write it. Yes and Jesus said to hang all of the commandments on the one to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind, and the second to love your neighbor as yourself. The reason is obvious. When we love there is no room for any jealousy, strife or division to break any of the others. God is good. Hey, are you in Facebook? I would love to have you and Janbeek as friends there also. Take care my online friend, sister in Christ and fellow blogger. Have a great day!

      1. I’m so relieved that’s sorted! I thought I’d seen your full name somewhere but was beginning to doubt myself.😂
Sorry Donna, I’m not on any form of social media except for WordPress. I was on Facebook some years ago, but didn’t like it. I can just about cope with WP. 😁 x

      2. Lol. I totally understand. My mom has wanted to get rid of Facebook several times. If I lived closer to her I could show her how to unfollow people that only posted garbage and go to and like the Christian pages so that would flow through her newstreams. I know it can be annoying to see all the garbage until you get it cleaned up. It is nice to see all my family’s posts though. God bless you Lesley. I am thankful for your friendship here. ❤

      3. One of my brothers-in-law is very racist. He’s into fascism and the likes. Just as well we only see him occasionally. My husband is nothing like his brother. They get on well, but hubby doesn’t approve of his views.

      4. I am sorry. Thank God for His great love. He loves your husbands brother so much that He laid down His life for him. No one is so far away that God can’t reach them. I will agree with you in prayer over your brother in law, that he will come to the Lord. ♡
