Second of the 10 Commandments

Exodus 20:1,4-6 NLT  1Then God gave the people all these instructions: 4“You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. 5 You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me. 6 But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.”

You must not make any idol or bow down to them. Before you say, well I don’t have any carved idols, think about what the New Testament describes as idols.

Colossians 3:5 ESV Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

Sorry, but this is God’s word! We need to listen to, receive and act on it. The Ten Commandments are not just something beautiful to hang on our walls. It is great if they are hanging on our walls, but the commandments are so much more! They are the very heart of God for His children. Out of all of the things He could have wrote on stone for us to live by, He chose these ten. Today, let’s really grasp what the second one is.

The definition for idolatry is  extreme admiration, love, or reverence for something or someone. Some synonyms are love, admiring, idolizing, fetishization, worshipping, adoration, glorification and hero-worship to name a few. We need to think of anything or anyone that we have put on a pedestal. There should be no-one or nothing except  the Lord God on the throne of our hearts. Jesus said to love God with ALL of our hearts, mind and soul.  God says in Exodus chapter 20 v 5 that he will not tolerate our affection for other gods. Rightfully so, He deserves first place in our hearts, minds and soul.

Pray with me please,

Father,

We worship You. We give You all praise. We claim that You are our God, the One and Only True God. You and only You, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, are worthy of all praise. There is nothing that You cannot do! Thank You Lord for leading us to Your heart with the Ten Commandments. Help us, dear heavenly Father, to see these commandments In a new way and to give them the respect that they require. If we have been complacent about one, or, all of them, I ask You to prick our hearts to repentance, so that we can receive Your mercy in our time of need. Thank You, Lord, for loving us so much. We adore You. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

    1. You are quite welcome. God is good all the time, ever revealing Hisself to His children, loving us and reaching out for us. He is great and greatly to be praised. All hail King Jesus! Let His kingdom come and His will be done. Be blessed! Thanks for the comment.

  1. Yes, there are so many things we put in place of God. I feel that even when something or someone occupies our thoughts so much as to distract us from God, then we are making that thing/person an idol.
It is for our own good to keep God first in our lives and He is worthy! 🙌
    God bless, Donna. 💞
