Exodus 20:1,13 NLT 1 Then God gave the people all these instructions: 13 “You must not murder.”
Well that one is pretty simple right? I hope no-one reading this ever has a desire to break this commandment. But to grasp the enormity of the love of God, let’s read what the New Testament says about murder.
Matthew 5 21-24 NIV
21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.
23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.
We need to be careful about the words that are coming out of our mouths. Philippians 4:8 says to think on things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, of good report, virtuous, or praise worthy. The Bible says out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. (Matthew 12:34) So then, if we think on the right things and fill our heart with the word of God, then there will be no garbage coming out from our mouth.
1 John 3:15 Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.
See, it is all about a man’s heart. If a person really loves the Lord and puts Him first above all else, making Him the ruler of his heart and life, there will be a true love that emanates from that person. Love covers a multitude of sins (1 Peter 4:8). Perfect love casts out fear (1 John 4:18). God is love and in Him is no darkness, only Light for He is Light (1 John 1:5). Then as we become His lights and as we grow in Him, we love more, deeper and truer. So that love, His love, becomes our guiding force. The more we submit to Him, the more He can show His love through us to a lost and dying world. We just need to humble ourselves in the sight of God and He will lift us up. Today and every day hereafter may we, as Christ-followers, allow love to be our defining force.

Dearest and most holy Heavenly Father,
We cry out holy, holy, holy. You are holy. We reverence Your name with the utmost respect and claim You are God of our lives, finances, emotions and physical well-being. You are above all else in our lives. There is nothing You cannot do through a heart that is yielded to You and Your Lordship. You are awesome and amazing.
We ask You today to let Your love permeate our hearts, minds and thoughts. Let us love our enemies with Your love. Only You know what that will mean for us individually but we trust You to take us to a higher place of knowledge in Your most holy way of love.
Lord, You embody love, that is just who You are. Teach us to love the way that you want us to love. Help us to not murder with our hate. Please remove any and all hate from our hearts. Your word says, if a man says he loves God and hates his brother, that man is a liar. How can we hate our brother we have seen and love God show we have not seen? (1 John 4:20) Please let us desire the meat of Your word, a closer relationship with You. Oh, God, hear our cry and etch this sixth Commandment and all of the others, in our hearts. Draw Your children close to You. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Yes, it’s not as straightforward as it seems. For the majority of us, we have no inclination to commit the act of murder … but taking care of our thoughts and words needs a lot of help from the Lord. It does for me anyway! 🙂 x

Yes, we are a work in progress for sure. Every day I feel renewed and strengthened by His love and grace. Even though we aren’t perfect, we are trying and that is what God wants is for us to not give up and keep trying. The end is near. Love you.
