Tenth of the Ten Commandments

Exodus 20:1,17 NLT 1 Then God gave the people all these instructions: 17 “You must not covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.”

Read the story of the good Samaritan to know who is your neighbor. (Luke 10:25-37) It is more than proximity. To covet is to yearn to have something. To yearn is to have an intense feeling of longing.

So, in essence, we are told here not to have an intense feeling of longing for the following:

  1. Your neighbors house.
  2. Your neighbors wife.
  3. Your neighbors male or female servant.
  4. Your neighbors ox or donkey.
  5. Anything else that belongs to your neighbor.

Be content with what you have. God has said He will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). Again this goes back to our heart. What are we feeding it? The only way to want something so much is to think on it relentlessly. To let it have more attention in our thoughts than it deserves.  I challenge us that when we see something that makes us think, “oh I need to have that,”  stop instead and just say, “Praise God for that blessing on whomever.” Then leave it alone. Don’t dwell on it.

Instead, dwell on the blessings that God has supplied you with. Start writing them down, declare God’s greatness to you. Praise Him for His many provisions. List them. Watch and see how your paper will grow. If we would just get our eyes and minds off of what everyone else has and put the focus on what God has already given us. Perspective is everything. If we just think of the blessing of the blood of Jesus that was shed for our sins. We should be the most happy people, knowing the price that was paid for us. The sacrifice that was made on the cross. That is the only blessing we actually need.

All of the other stuff will pass away. It will all get left behind for others to enjoy. What really matters is our treasure in heaven. God is good. You will see how great our God is and He will bring you even closer to His side when you follow His word. Ahhhhhh, such sweet communion. To Him who is ever to be praised, be all the glory,  both now and evermore.

Pray with me please,

Lord God,

You are our Savior. We praise You for Your goodness to men. Thank You for Your great love.

Would You help us today, Father, to see where we have failed You in having an intense longing for anything that belongs to our neighbor? Help us to count our blessings. We need Your help, Lord. You are our strength, help and provider. You make all things new (Revelation 21:5).  You are continuing Your work in us. We claim Romans 12:2 will be practiced in our life,  We won’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but we will let You transform us into  new people by changing the way we think.  We will have perfect peace because we trust in You (Isaiah 26:3). We want Your will to be done in our lives. We surrender to Your authority. We claim You are Lord over our hearts and that our longings will be for You only.

Help us, dear Lord, for we know the time is near. We anxiously await Your return. May we all be ready. With ever so much love and desire to love You more. In Jesus’ name, Your children.

Philippians 4:8 NKJV Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy–meditate on these things.

  1. I am happy to find this great post, because I’ve been meditating on this today too.
When we are envious, it is deeply hurtful to God, because we are telling him, through our envy, that what he is given us is not “good enough”.
Envy also is guaranteed to make us feel miserable.
Let us rejoice both in the blessings that we constantly receive, and the blessings God gives to others. This is the essence of joy. 🤗

    1. Thank you for your response! I am so glad that God led me to write them. He is so good. God has us in His hands. We can rest in Him. Such security I feel in the Father’s arms. Be blessed! Our Lord is coming soon! 🙂
