Addictions

Addictions, we face them every day. The examples of some are sex, food, drugs and alcohol. What does the word of God say? How can we find help?  Is there freedom from these things? Let’s have a look.

1 Corinthians 10:13 NLT The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

Hebrews 4:15 NKJV For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

1 John 4:1-6 NIV Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world. 4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 5 They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.

They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. That is what the problem is. We have been fighting the world all along. It has taught us to believe things that are contrary with the word of God. Confess and repent, and God will forgive us. We have been led astray. It is okay to acknowledge that fact. As a matter of fact, I have heard that 90 percent of fixing a problem, is realizing that you have a problem. So there lies hope! We only have ten percent now to get freedom from. We got this. With God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26).

We have the strength and power of the Lord God Almighty living inside of us, as believers in Jesus Christ. We can do all things through Christ who strengthen us. Please start turning to His word for the truth. We can be set free from the bondage of sin. We can have victory over the spirit of suicide, fear, loneliness, sex, drugs and alcohol. We are liberated. We have the power living inside of us. The problem is, we also have a free will. The Bible says choose this day who you will serve (Joshua 24:15). It is all about your heart. What choice will you make when faced with a temptation? Will you turn to God and trust him or will you succumb to the temptation? You might be saying, but how can it be that simple? Well it is. I think we have a tendency to overcomplicate things. Let’s just focus on the word of God here and choose this day to serve Him.

John 14:12-14 NIV Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

We just have to pray in accordance with His will. Find His will by reading His word.

Mark 14:35-36 NLT He went on a little farther and fell to the ground. He prayed that, if it were possible, the awful hour awaiting him might pass him by. 36 “Abba, Father,” he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”

2 Timothy 2:22-26 NLT Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts. 23 Again I say, don’t get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. 24 A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people. 25 Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth. 26 Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants.

For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants. I am not just making this up, this is the actual word of God. You see who our enemy is here. The one who is holding us captive is the one whom the Bible says goes around like a roaring lion seeking who he can devour (1 Peter 5:8). He will blind you, deceive you and even trick you. We must stay prayed up, on the alert and ready. It is imperative to have the word of God dwell in us richly (Colossians 3:16). If you don’t stand for something you will fall for anything (Peter Marshall).

Pray this prayer with me if you need release from the bondages of depression, alcohol, drugs, sex or any other addiction.

Father,

Thank You for guiding us in Your precious word. Oh, that we could understand Your ways and walk in the path that leads to everlasting life. Your will and ways are not too hard to follow or understand. Help us to take back the peace of mind that the enemy has stolen. Help us to stand up as children of the most high God and resist the enemy and also the desires of our flesh which wage war against our soul (1 Peter 2:11). We are held in bondage to satan. Your children are suffering Lord because we do not know how to fight him. Forgive us for our lack of knowledge and increase in us a desire to know You more. With Your word, at the very name of Jesus, satan and his demons and generals have to flee.

(Say this out loud) satan, we command you to flee from our presence, in the mighty name of Jesus. We speak to you, and your demons and generals right now, in the name of Jesus, to leave our mind, home and schools (Luke 10:17, James 4:7).

Lord, we ask You to come in our minds, home and schools where the enemy has left. Increase in us, so that if satan tries to come back, he will have no point of entry (Matthew 12:45). Lord, please break these chains that have held us, your children, in bondage for far too long. You want nothing but good things for us. In You we have peace, love, strength, power and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). There is nothing that we cannot do through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13).

Father, please help us to reiterate Your truths over our minds, homes and schools. Let the truth of Your word shine to all of these places illuminating the darkness. We love you and we praise You. We ask You all these things in Jesus’ name. Amen.
