Do Not Grieve the Holy Spirit

We are sealed with the Holy Spirit upon salvation, by listening and believing the gospel. Sin grieves the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30).

The definition of grieve is cause great distress to. Knowing that makes my eyes fill with tears. Please learn with me what could we be doing that would possibly cause great distress to the Holy Spirit, so that we can repent and draw nearer to the Lord. Let’s look at the Holy Spirit  as named in the Bible.

  • Spirit of Truth is the Holy Spirit. (John 15:26)

Lying, gossip, uncontrolled or extreme anger, stealing, cursing, bitterness, spitefulness,  and loud quarreling  grieves the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 4:25-32 NKJV

25 Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another. 26 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 nor give place to the devil. 28 Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. 29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

  • Spirit of Wisdom is the Holy Spirit (Isaiah 11:2).

We can grieve the Holy Spirit with our neglect, and, or, ignorance of spiritual truths. We need to be in the word of God, at minimal, daily, to find the help we need and to find help to encourage others. The holy Word of God is also how He speaks to our heart. We cannot be strong and effective Christ-followers without the word of God dwelling in us richly (Colossians 3:16).

Hosea 4:6 NKJV My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; Because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.

  • Spirit of Life and Power is the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:2, 2 Timothy 1:7).

This is no time to be that lukewarm Christian.  It is time to get on fire for God. We need to study His word. The truth of the knowledge of salvation should be given to everyone, everywhere, at any time to whomever we may encounter.

Revelation 3: 15-16 NKJV “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.

  • Spirit of Holiness is the Holy Spirit (Romans 1:4 ).

1 Peter 1:16 NLT For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.”

Ephesians 5:3-7 NLT Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God’s people. 4 Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God. 5 You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.

6 Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him. 7 Don’t participate in the things these people do.

Now that we see what grieves the Holy Spirit, let us make up our minds to not do anything that would grieve Him. We are sealed with the Holy Spirit after listening and believing the gospel.

1 Timothy 6:6-10 NKJV Now godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Get rid of sin. Grieving the Holy Spirit is a consequence of our sins. Knowing that it hurts the Holy Spirit, shouldn’t that pierce our hearts to stop sinning? What shall we sin then that grace abound? God  forbid! Walk in newness of life (Romans 6:1)!

1 John 1:5-10  NKJV This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

We can’t be selfish anymore. It is time to start being kingdom minded. Keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). We are going to heaven one day. This truth should flood our hearts with joy. One day we are going to see the Lord. We will get to see Jesus!  One day we are going to walk through those gates of that city, whose builder and maker is God (Hebrews 11:10). We don’t have time to worry about the things of the world. Now is the time for shining the Light for the saving of souls.

John 14:1-4 NKJV “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

Pray with me please

Our Father,

We greatly revere You and honor You. We proclaim that You are holy. You are Light and in You is no darkness. We want to walk as children of the Light. Your DNA is in us, so please help us to represent You well at all times. If there is some hidden sin in us, I pray that You, even now, bring it to the surface. I speak to it in the name of Jesus to reveal itself. Father, we repent of any sin that grieves Your Holy Spirit. You are truth, wisdom, life, power and holiness. There is no-one like You in all the land. There is nothing You cannot do. Draw us closer to You so that the world can see You through us. Lord, let them see You in us. Let them hear You when we speak. Help us to die to ourselves and live fully committed to You. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

We are instructed to bear one another’s burdens, (Galatians 6:2) so if there are any prayer requests feel free to leave them in the comment section. I would be honored to pray with you. If it is more private you can always contact me via email at luckd61@yahoo.com I check that every day. Blessings to you all, till we meet again, tomorrow, if the Lord is willing. Peace.

    1. Thank you.
I believe we all have that grace upon salvation and now it just comes down to a choice. He has given us free will. The decision to serve Him is ours and we make it every single moment of every single day. But grace is something we can grow in according to 2 Peter 3:18. That happens the more we read the word of God and believe, and the more we make those right choices.
Blessings to you sister. Thanks for the comment. Hope you have a wonderful day. It is supposed to rain all day here. 2 Sundays in a row. Glad I went for a 5 mile bike ride yesterday. ♡ Hugs ♡
