The First and the Second Woe

Jesus told it like it is. He didn’t mince His words.

The First and the Second Woe:

Matthew 23:13-14 NASB “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut off the kingdom of heaven from people; for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. 14 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense you make long prayers; therefore you will receive greater condemnation.

A biblical definition of the word woe is:

The word “woe” is often used to express grief, regret, misfortune or grievous distress stated from such a great affliction of some sort or being in such trouble that an escape out of it seems impossible.

Some synonyms for hypocrite are: pretender, deceiver, imposter and phony.

Thy Word by Amy Grant

Jesus pronounced a woe on scribes, Pharisees and hypocrites. Let’s look to the word of God to see what we are to do and how we are to act, so that we would never be that phony Christian.

One word from God is worth so much more than tens of thousands of mine. Let’s read His word together.

Micah 6:8 NKJV He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?

Matthew 3:2 NLT Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.

Matthew 5:3 KJV Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 6:5-15 NASB “When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. 6 But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. 7 “And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words. 8 So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. 9 “Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. 10 ‘Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. 11 ‘Give us this day our daily bread. 12 ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’] 14 For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.

Ephesians 4:14-31 NLT  Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. 15 Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. 16 He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love. 17 With the Lord’s authority I say this: Live no longer as the Gentiles do, for they are hopelessly confused. 18 Their minds are full of darkness; they wander far from the life God gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against him. 19 They have no sense of shame. They live for lustful pleasure and eagerly practice every kind of impurity. 20 But that isn’t what you learned about Christ. 21 Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, 22 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. 23 Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. 24 Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy. 25 So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body. 26 And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 for anger gives a foothold to the devil. 28 If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need. 29 Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. 30 And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. 32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

Trust in His promises.

Galatians 1:3-10 NASB Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 4 who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5 to whom be the glory forevermore. Amen. 6 I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; 7 which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! 9 As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed! 10 For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ.

Oh most holy Father,

May Your will be done in my life and in the lives of those reading and agreeing with me today. Open our eyes to see the truth as outlined in Your word. People can argue a lot of things but they cannot argue Your truth. I believe the whole of Your word. Help us to love and to be humble. Lord, may we be pleasing in Your sight by how we pray and by the things we do and say. Help us to be kind to one another. Let our lives truly be a living example of the love of Christ, always pointing others to Your grace, love, mercy and forgiveness. May we abound in Your knowledge. Oh for the great day that You come back to this earth to get Your bride. May we all be ready, keeping ourselves unspotted from the world, by Your holy power living in us. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

  1. And I would like to add, “Father let us not accuse fellow Christians of being phoney should they have a different political view to us. Let us all know that, even though we may disagree, we can still love each other. Amen”

    1. That is a good thing to add. We shouldn’t judge anyone. That is between them and God. Only if we see someone overtaken in a sin are we to correct them. And then it is only in meekness considering ourselves lest we also be tempted. (Galatians 6:1)
As much as possible, we are to live at peace with all men. (Romans 12:18) Thanks so much for your valuable addition. I pray you are well. May the Lord shower His favor upon you. God bless you Lesley.

  2. I’m concerned for you, Donna. I understand that you want to be a good soldier for Christ. All I would say is put your trust in the Holy Spirit and not so much in this man who is apparently mentoring you. You seem to have changed from the person I knew only a few months ago. The person I came to know then was sweet, but there seems to be an aggression creeping in. You still remain my sister in Christ. Take care. x

    1. My trust is in the Lord. He leads me and guides my every step. I always pray that every word i utter will be under His will and authority. I use so much scripture to point people to the truth because indeed the end is near.
I am sorry I have offended you somehow. I think I am sweet still, LOL. i just have to speak the truth in love. That is always my objective. It saddens me that you would think any less of me for doing such. But that is okay, i do not hold any grudges and will leave the complete matter in the hands of the Lord. I will seek out other Christian’s as well who will let me know if I have done anything wrong as we all should have someone to be accountable to. God bless you.

      1. You didn’t offend me, but I did feel hurt. I’m saying no more about it Donna. We both agree it’s in God’s hands.

  3. I do not see “an aggression” in you Donna. I see a woman who is growing in the Lord, trying to reach out to others. There is nothing wrong with your “eyes opening” to the corruption in the world and trying to alert others to the hypocrisy that we are bombarded with daily via the news. The Bible warns of these things happening in the last days, and many refuse to see the truth. Keep fighting the good fight, and do not let others steal your joy. Remember how Christ was treated and do not expect any different from a world covered in darkness and sin.

  4. Hmm, I don’t see a change or an aggression… perhaps an awakening, perhaps a deepening in the word of God. Yes we are saved by Grace, yes we are called to love but we are also called to reach for righteousness and holiness as described in the word. We are not to judge others for only God knows the heart of a person but we can definitely see the fruit of a person’s life and choices. We can see both the fruit of the spirit and the fruit of our carnal nature…
Your blog today was the word of God, Our standard as we chase after Him.
    Thank you Donna.

  5. Hello, Donna, thank you for taking to the time to write this encouraging article. I would also like to encourage you and the rest of the community here to keep following Yahweh’s plans for your life, because As Individuals as we grow closer to the Lord, Romans 12:2 starts to take affect and we as individuals think less like the world does and more like Christ, did on earth and still does in heaven, Jesus was bold and He is all of our example… People didn’t like Jesus either because He spoken truthful boldness that rivaled the way many in the world think…

Days are growing more evil by the day and many are going to turn from sound doctrine found in the bible to become lovers of themselves with their desires instead of selfless lovers unto Jesus Christ’s sound doctrine found in the bible…

    2 Timothy 3:1-4
But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

The scripture above, is happening today all around us… As Christians we must remain vigilant & diligent with our faith walks as individuals with the Lord, Yahweh, then as we do we can be view by God making up the body of the Bride of Christ, as each individual that makes the body of Christ whole.

    God Bless,
