The Fourth Woe of Jesus and the Truth of His Word

Matthew 23:16-22 NASB “Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, that is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple is obligated.’ 17 You fools and blind men! Which is more important, the gold or the temple that sanctified the gold? 18 And, ‘Whoever swears by the altar, that is nothing, but whoever swears by the offering on it, he is obligated.’ 19 You blind men, which is more important, the offering, or the altar that sanctifies the offering? 20 Therefore, whoever swears by the altar, swears both by]the altar and by everything on it. 21 And whoever swears by the temple, swears both by the temple and by Him who dwells within it. 22 And whoever swears by heaven, swears both by the throne of God and by Him who sits upon it.

A biblical definition of the word woe is:

The word “woe” is often used to express grief, regret, misfortune or grievous distress stated from such a great affliction of some sort or being in such trouble that an escape out of it seems impossible.

Some synonyms for hypocrite are: pretender, deceiver, imposter and phony.

There are in Matthew 8 woes from Jesus. As in the first, second and third and all the subsequent ones, till we get to the eighth, I will share where the Bible says:

Galatians 1:9 NKJV As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.

Matthew 5:33-37 NKJV “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’ 34 But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.

James 5:7-20 NASB Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until it gets the early and late rains. 8 You too be patient; strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near. 9 Do not complain, brethren, against one another, so that you yourselves may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing right at the door. 10 As an example, brethren, of suffering and patience, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 We count those blessed who endured. You have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord’s dealings, that the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful. 12 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment. 13 Is anyone among you suffering? Then he must pray. Is anyone cheerful? He is to sing praises. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; 15 and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months. 18 Then he prayed again, and the sky poured rain and the earth produced its fruit. 19 My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

Pray with me please

Heavenly Father, Lord of Glory,

All strength, honor and power are Yours. May we not forget how very powerful You are Lord. You tell the seas to still and the waves obey You. Who is there like our God? I declare there is none.

We beseech You Lord, to open our eyes so that we would see the truth of Your word. Help us to apply Your word to our hearts that we might not sin against You. We desperately need You, Father. The world would have us to walk in a completely different way. We need You. We need Your direction. We need pastors and teachers who aren’t afraid to speak Your word with power and conviction.

Please, Lord, open our hearts and minds to a new and more powerful and meaningful walk with You, our righteous Judge and awesome Savior.

May the things we do and say be pleasing in Your sight and may we follow those who are truly sold out and committed in following You 100% (Psalm 19:14).

Help us to say along with James 4:15,  If it is Your will, we will live and do this or that. We want Your will to be done in our lives. Not our will, but Yours be done in all of our lives. Let us grow in our knowledge of You and Your truth. Help us to shine so bright for You. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13). Here we stand, yielded to You, have Your will in my life and the lives of those agreeing with me in prayer. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

  1. I’ve always liked that scripture, “… but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no…” as it speaks to my parenting and teaching. It speaks to consistency and follow-through. It speaks to integrity. I ask God for help with those important qualities every day. Thank you, Donna, for your daily examples of them. Have a blessed day. Thanks for your message and the inspiration of music 🎶❤️
