So, you have asked the Lord Jesus into your heart and now you want to know what to do next. There are three things that you need to do as a new Christian. They are:
- Read the word of God
- Pray to God
- Worship the Lord.
Those three things will draw you closer to God. He will reveal what His good and pleasing will is for you and your life (Romans 12:2). The more that you learn about Him, the deeper you will go in communication with and understanding of Him.
The first thing I have listed is reading the word of God. These are not in any particular order, as in, it is not a formula of one, two or three. They are all three important ways to draw closer to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His word is living and breathing (Hebrews 4:12). We read His word because the Bible says in 2 Timothy 2:15 to study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that doesn’t need to be ashamed, but rightly dividing the word of truth.
The second way to get closer to God is prayer. He longs to hear from us. We are to pray at all times (Luke 18:1 & 1 Thessalonians 5:17-18). We need to pray all the time in all situations, giving thanks to God (Luke 21:36). Pray, pray, pray, just talk to God about everything and for everyone (Hebrews 4:16). Think about it, He is a personal God. The Bible says that even the very hairs on our heads are numbered (Matthew 10:30). That is how much He loves us.
In our earthly attempts to love, do we or do we not talk to the person that we want a relationship with? Whether it is our spouse, father, mother, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, cousin or friend, if we want to know them more, we talk and we listen. I am here to tell you that is what we need to be doing with God; talking to Him and listening for His voice. He speaks through His word. How will you know what He is saying if you don’t take the time to read His word?
Matthew 11:25-30 NIV At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
27 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
The third way to get close to God is through worship. We worship by singing, by having a pure heart (doing the right things for the right reasons), and declaring God’s greatness. We humble ourselves and put Him on the pedestal of our heart. We ascribe all power, honor and glory is His.
1 Chronicles 16:23-31 New International Version (NIV)
23 Sing to the Lord, all the earth; proclaim His salvation day after day.
24 Declare His glory among the nations, His marvelous deeds among all peoples. 25 For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; He is to be feared above all gods. 26 For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the Lord made the heavens. 27 Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in His dwelling place. 28 Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. 29 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name; bring an offering and come before Him.
Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness. 30 Tremble before Him, all the earth! The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved. 31 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let them say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!”
Pray with me please
Dearest heavenly Father,
We worship You Lord in the beauty of Your holiness (Psalm 96:9). We declare You are the one and only true God (John 17:3, Jeremiah 10:10 & John 3:16). There is none beside You. You are Father, Son and Holy Spirit (Colossians 2:9, John 1:14 &10:30, John 14:16-17, Luke 3:21-22). You are all three, yet You are one (2 Corinthians 13:14, John 14:9-11). This is a great mystery which I believe You will reveal to us on the day we meet You. Then we will know as we are known (Matthew 7:21-23). For now we see dimly (1 Corinthians 13:12). The day will come when we will understand. Until that day I will declare that You are God and there is no other. You are eternal life and You Have given us life (John 5:26 &14:6). We worship and adore You. Thank You for everything You have given us. Let us be pleasing in Your sight by doing and saying all the right things for all the right reasons (1 Peter 1:15). Unite our hearts, souls and minds with Yours (Psalm 86:11). Let there be no slander, malice or evil speaking of any of Your children, to or about any of our brothers and sisters in You (Titus 3:2-6). Let us adhere to Your word and may there be no divisions among Your people according to the truth (1 Corinthians 1:10 & John 17:23). In Jesus’ name. Amen.
