Doers—Not Hearers Only

James 1:21-27

21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. 25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.

26 If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless. 27 Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

Father God,

We just want to thank You for Your word. Thank You for Your goodness to all mankind. Thank You for Your great love and provision. There is not a single problem, worry or circumstance that You cannot fix. Thank You.

Help us to be doers of the word, and not hearers only. Whatever You speak to us may we listen and make the necessary changes. You are holy and You call us to be holy (1 Peter 1:16). We cannot do that apart from You. Help us to watch what we say to others and how we say things. There is a right and wrong way in all things. May we be slow to speak and eager to learn from You (James 1:19). I ask that our words would be Your words. May we not do anything out of selfish ambition, rather that we would humble ourselves and value others above ourselves (Philippians 2:3-4).

We see in the above scripture that pure religion is to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. I pray that You would help us to keep our mind set on these things. Please provide wisdom from above (James 3:17). Your word says if any man lacks wisdom let him ask and You will give it to him (James 1:5). We ask You now to open our eyes to help where and when we can help others. Let all things be done to Your praise and for Your glory. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

    1. Good morning Cindy! It sure is a beautiful morning here. Just went for a 20 minute walk with my 16 year old daughter. It always feels good to get outside. I got to enjoy nature with the blessing of her company. God is so good to us. Thanks for taking the time to comment today. I am glad you liked the video. John Waller is one of our favorite Christian artists. Have a great day with the Lord. With His love, Donna.
