1 Timothy 4:1-3 NASB But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 2 by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron, 3 who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth.
People are blinded in some churches. God is telling us to wake up and resist those false demonic doctrines that have infiltrated churches. The devil is out trying to kill, steal and destroy (John 10:10). It is our responsibility, as children of God, to rise up and shine the light of the glorious gospel in the darkness, exposing the wickedness by revealing the truth.
Matthew 24:11 NASB And many false prophets will rise up and mislead many people.
Satan is cunning. He uses people who masquerade themselves as prophets, pastors, teachers or apostles. Not everyone who says they are a pastor, prophet, apostle or teacher have been ordained by Christ. We have to know the truth. Jesus said, you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32). Jesus is the truth. He said, I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me (John 14:6).
1 John 4:1 NASB Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
I understand this can be intimidating, but we are told to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12). We cannot get to heaven on someone else’s shirttails. We have to study the word of God ourselves to know the truth (2 Timothy 2:15). When we study, then we will know when a person is saying something that doesn’t align with His word. We can not sit under false doctrine. The people who distort the gospel are to be accursed (Galatians 1:6-10). The word of God will teach us what to do and not to do. If you are new to Christ, I urge you to start reading in the New Testament. I like to start with the book of John. As Christ-followers, we need to see how Jesus walked in this world. He is our example. It is Him we follow.
We adore You. We claim You are our God and there is none besides You. Your word is our guide and we will adhere to the truths that are contained therein. We pray today asking for discernment. Help us to be full on the truths of Your word. May we hunger and thirst for righteousness. Help us to never blindly follow any leader, but check what they are saying against the light of Your gospel. If what anyone is saying doesn’t line up with the Bible, give us the courage and strength to do what You would have us to do. Speak to our hearts, Lord. We need You. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
I confess that Jesus is Lord (Philippians 2:11)! We are not to believe every spirit, but to try them to see if they are from God. For there are many false prophets. The Bible says this is how we will know: Every
spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. And is the spirit of the antichrist (1 John 4:1-3).
