What is Baptism?

Baptism is water immersion that symbolizes an inner change. It is showing the world that you are dead to your old ways of life and are alive now in Christ. Baptism is being cleansed (not outwardly but inwardly) by being immersed in water. Some believe to sprinkle with water, I am not here to squabble over that. The Bible says work out your own salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12). Personally, I just feel our baptism should be the same as Jesus’ baptism, as He is our Great Example in all things. Once You get saved (ask Jesus into your heart to forgive you for your sins) then you need to be baptized.

Matthew 3:13-16 NKJV Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?” 15 But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him. 16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

Jesus also told us to be baptized.

Matthew 28:18-20 NKJV And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

John 3:5 NKJV Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

The Bible says:

Acts 2:38 NKJV  Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 12:13 NKJV  For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.

Mark 16:16 NKJV He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.

So, we see the very importance of following the Lord in His death, burial and ascension by being baptized.

Pray with me please

Heavenly Father,

Your very name is holy. Thank You for everything You are doing, including the ways You are moving in and through Your people. We ask that Your will be done in our lives and on this earth as it is in Heaven. Grant Your children wisdom. Please use these words to help all people to understand the need of following You in water baptism. Help them to find a good church or even a devout Christian who can baptize them. We pray in Jesus’ precious name. Amen.
