1 Peter 2:1-2NKJV Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, 2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,
1 Corinthians 3:1-3 NKJV And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; 3 for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men?
Galatians 5:16 NKJV I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
The words meat and “solid food” refer to more advanced Christian teachings, but “milk” refers to basic Christian teachings. We read in the first two passages listed that all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, strife, and divisions and all evil speaking need to be laid aside. Though we are Christians, we are still human. You see in Corinthians three verse one they are referred to as brethren who were babes in Christ. So definitely saved people can have these carnal attitudes. Sometimes the flesh or satan or his demons will cause some of these behaviors. We may have picked up some of these things, but the good news is that we can lay them aside!
As Christians we should be growing in Jesus, in the truth of His word. Have you ever been to the South? If you aren’t raised there you will notice that they have a real cute Southern drawl. If you visit long enough, I am certain that you may develop that same accent as well. It won’t be long till you here a ya’ll coming from your own lips. My point is that as Christians when we spend time with the Lord and hunger and thirst for His righteousness, the more we are fed from Him and the less we desire to walk in those attributes of the flesh. Our desire should be growing in the Lord and to walk in a way that is pleasing unto Him. We have to lay down our pride and our selfish desires.
The more we walk with the Lord, the closer we get to Him. Then we are more able to discern His ways. Just as children emulate their parents, we, as Christians will begin to imitate our Father. We will want the things He wants for us and we will want to do the things that bring Him joy. As babies grow on the milk for the first year before they can handle more solid foods, so we grow on the beginnings of the truths of God in His word. As we grow we start to crave the meat of the word. We see that we no longer react in the flesh, like we used to and when we do react in the flesh, there is a much quicker repentance. For we want nothing to separate us from our Father.
Pray with me please,
Our gracious, most holy, wonderful and loving Father,
We come before You today humbled at Your greatness. We desire more of You. We ask that You grow in our hearts, minds, souls and relationships. We ask that our reactions to every situation would be honoring to You. Place a guard over our mouths. Help us to not say anything that we would have to come back and apologize later for. It hurts so much when we fail You. If we do let us come before Your throne humbly and quickly to repent. Help us to be stronger and to grow in Your wisdom. We hunger and thirst for more of Your righteousness. Increase our desire to love You and serve You even more. We give You all the praise for we pray asking all things in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Romans 8:5-14 NLT
Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. 6 So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. 7 For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will. 8 That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God.
9 But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to Him at all.) 10 And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God. 11 The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, He will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.
12 Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. 13 For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.
