Ties That Bind

Mark 9:43-50 NKJV  If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched– 44 where ‘Their worm does not die, And the fire is not quenched.’ 45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame, rather than having two feet, to be cast into hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched– 46 where ‘Their worm does not die, And the fire is not quenched.’ 47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire– 48 where ‘Their worm does not die, And the fire is not quenched.’ 49 “For everyone will be seasoned with fire, and every sacrifice will be seasoned with salt. 50 Salt is good, but if the salt loses its flavor, how will you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace with one another.”

Jesus wasn’t telling the people then or now to physically hurt themselves. He had just finished talking about not hurting any innocent ones and He concluded with saying not to hurt the innocent ones (new converts-Matthew 18:3). If there is something that You are watching or doing or somewhere that you are going that you shouldn’t be watching, doing or going then stop it. Cut off literal ties to people, places or situations that might seem fun for you but if you keep doing them then you will go to hell. This tells me that those who keep doing the wrong things and have a hardened heart were probably never genuinely saved to begin with because we, as Christians, make it our goal to please Him (2 Corinthians 5:9). What Jesus gave was a sincere warning about the matters of the heart. Jesus is always telling us it is what is in the heart that counts.

Shockingly, some people take the above verses literally. They are not meant that way. Even if we were to do that kind of bodily harm, it would not stop our mind or heart from doing the sin. Remember, Jesus said if a man even looks at a woman to lust after her, he has already committed adultery with her (Matthew 5:28). Now that was without even doing the deed. Be it known that there are costs in being a Christian. We are to pick up our cross and follow Jesus. There are things that we will have to quit wearing, saying, doing or even places that we have to stop going to. The Holy Spirit will convict us as we grow in the Lord.

Pray with me please.

Father God,

You are so immeasurably wonderful. There are no words to describe the magnitude of Your goodness. You are worthy of all praise. We exalt You. We ask that You would continue to grow in us. Make us who You want us to be. Help us as we continue growing in You, to die to the flesh. Burn off anything that is unpleasing in Your sight. May we have the power to let go of anything that goes against Your holy will for us. If it is suffering that we have to go through, strengthen us to be patient, loving, gentle and kind as we go through it. May we never render evil for evil or insult to insult but rather let our lives be a living sacrifice for Your glory. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
