“And when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get. 17 But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. 18 Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.
Jesus-Matthew 6:16-18 NLT
The main thing to remember is that fasting is best kept between yourself and God. We can tell other believers if there is a united call for fasting and prayer. Remember the Lord knows our hearts.

The formula that the book of Nehemiah chapter nine contained are as such:
- Read from the Book of the Law for a quarter of the day.
- Confess sins to God and worship Him for a quarter of the day.
- The leaders cry unto the Lord. Then they gave the people instruction to stand and bless the Lord. They told Him of the great things He has done in creation. They told Him He is righteous, gracious, merciful, slow to anger and kind. They told Him of His past faithfulness.
- Present requests.
Since the Lord knows our hearts, I believe fasting to be a very private interaction between the Christian and the Lord.
For more verses on fasting in the New Testament please see Acts 13:2-3, 14:23, Luke 2:37, Luke 18:12 and Mark 9:29. There are so many things for us to learn from God’s word.
Father God,
We are so thankful for Your guidance in all things. Thank You for Your Word which is our help, our shield and our strength. Every good thing comes from You and we praise You today for all that You have done in this world. You are good and of Your mercy there is no end. Help us to understand Your word. Let us be found doing that which is right in Your eyes. If there is a time You are calling us to fast, may we have the wisdom to know for how long and what things that would be pleasing to You for us to give up. May our hearts be right as we briefly fast in order to walk more closely with You. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Amen Sister!
