Help us to understand Your word please, Lord God.
“Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose. 18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved. 19 So if you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God’s laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.
Jesus in Matthew 5:17-20 NLT
20 “But I warn you—unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven!
Jesus said here in Matthew that He did not come to put an end to (abolish) the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. He said He came to fulfil them. Everything in the Old Testament pointed to Jesus, who was the only One ever to live a perfect and sinless life and the only One who ever could. He died that we may live. Our new life is in Him (2 Corinthians 5:17).
In addition, the sacrificial system given to Israel by God in the law required the killing of animals, blood sacrifices, to pay for human sin. They were effective only temporarily, and only until new sins were committed, then more blood had to be spilled (Hebrews 10:1–4). Jesus, though, as the perfect, sinless human sacrifice for sin fulfilled the need for that blood sacrifice once and for all (Hebrews 10:11–14).

Jesus is the promised Messiah (Matthew 1:21). Jesus kept and fulfilled the law. Jesus shows us how to live a righteous life and He alone gives us the power to do so when we give our heart to Him and receive a new heart and the power of His Holy Spirit to guide us in all truth (Ezekiel 36:26, Luke 11:13 & Acts 5:32).
Father God,
We come to You today as a broken people. We sin constantly. We try so hard not to, but it seems there is always something that we say, think, or do that is wrong. Sin is always crouching at our door. We thank You for the covering of Jesus’ blood over us. May we always remember what a high price was paid for our sins. May we live to honor You and bring honor to Your name. We ask for a continual cleansing of our heart and mind. As we remain in You, please help us to live (think, say and do) the way that Jesus showed us. Continue to mold and make us into usable vessels for Your kingdom.
We agree with David and ask, who are we that You think and care about us? (Psalm 8:4) But, oh the knowledge that You do, how it blesses, comforts and strengthens us. Lord, God, how majestic, marvelous and wonderful is Your name in all the earth! How great are the works of Your hands. How wonderful it is that You have supplied everything that we need (Philippians 4:19). You are good. You are God and we worship You. May Your kingdom come, and Your will be done. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
