21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire. 23 Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire. to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, the judge hand you over to the officer, and you be thrown into prison. 26 Assuredly, I say to you, you will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny.
Matthew 5:21-26 NKJV
There can be head change without having heart change. Unfortunately head change is not going to do us any good without first having a heart change. Our attitudes and even our thoughts can be just as bad or worse than the actual sinful action. We must be very careful in what we even think about others. The word of God says that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be what? They shall be in danger of the judgment. The question is where does our anger stem from? Is it a righteous anger? We must be angry and sin not (Ephesians 4:26).
The Bible says, but whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire. From the heart comes words that ought not to be (James 3:10). If we have anything against someone or them against us, we are told we are not to even give our gift to God. We have to leave our gift at the altar and first go and be reconciled with them.
Father God,
How wonderful You are. How great and mighty. How magnificent is Your very name. We love You and exalt You. You are God and there is no other. Thank You for freeing us to love You more and to show that love by what we think and even by what we say to others. Thank You for the gift of reconciliation. May we quickly and freely give forgiveness, love and mercy to others. May it be a new lifestyle for us to walk in a manner that is pleasing to You. Help us to practice not thinking bad things about others in real time (traffic, grocery store, telemarketers). Help us, strengthen us and forgive us where we have failed You. May we never call anyone fool, empty-headed, moron, jerk, idiot or any other slur. Every person has extreme value to You. No-one is worthless. We were made in Your image (Genesis 1:27). We are not perfect, but we can do better, through Your power living in us (Romans 3:10 & 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17). May Your Holy Spirit convict us immediately and may we listen and seek forgiveness and restitution quickly at all times with all people. May our heart’s cry be like Jesus’ final words while hanging on the cross, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do (Luke 23:34).” May Your kingdom come and Your will be done. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
