Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
Proverbs 18:21 NKJV
And those who love it will eat its fruit.
I remember a time when I was a lot younger, and someone had spoken negatively to me in my life. I wanted to share how it affected my whole life. Back story: I was given away by my mother and raised by foster parents. I was the very first one in my biological family to even get a high school education. Then I married an abusive alcoholic. I had wanted to sell life insurance. I spent the next few weeks studying for my exam. I then took the test and failed by 3 points. My ex-husband said that he knew I wouldn’t be able to pass it. He said I had never been anything and never would be anything. He said I was nothing. Then he said a lot of other things about my character that were untrue. The thing is, I had believed him and what he said left me feeling unable to accomplish anything. So, I gave up. I have shared this today to show the impact of our words. What I had needed to hear was, you can do this, you will accomplish it, there is nothing you can’t do, awe well you might have failed but it was only 3 points, take the test again and you will pass…. but I received none of those and the words that he did speak were the ones that shaped my life. Do you see the power we wield with our words?
What we need to be doing is speaking life to ourselves and all others that God has placed in our paths. Speak the truths that we know according to the Word of God.
“In every encounter we either give life or we drain it; there is no neutral exchange.”

Father God,
we thank You for all things. You are so awesome. Thank You for the wisdom that You have supplied us with in every page of Your precious word. Thank You for Jesus who is our Living Word. Thank You for the Holy Spirit who leads and guides us. Thank You for Your great and unconditional love that You have for all people. We ask for our speech to be pleasing to You. We ask for our conversations to be full of grace and seasoned with salt, so that we would know how to answer everyone (Colossians 4:6). We ask for Your help to slow down and to think before just throwing our words out there. May our words be Your words, full of grace and truth. We know that our words can make or break people. We want to use our words to revive, encourage and strengthen others. Help us to stop and think before we just blurt out things. May we get into the habit, as we are listening fully to others, to be also praying for the right words of response to them. We trust that You will give us the desires of our hearts. Those desires are to be pleasing to You in all things. Forgive us for the times that we have said wrong things. May we all learn a lesson from them and move forward guided by the knowledge of Your truth. May everything we think, say and do bring You glory. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
