Fifth of The Ten Commandments

Exodus 20:1,12 NLT Then God gave the people all these instructions: 12 “Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”

The definition of the word honor is to regard with great respect. Some synonyms are appreciate, value, prize, cherish and reverence. We need now, more than ever, to take the word of God seriously. Appreciate, value, and prize your parents. There is no stipulation listed there to only do it if they were nice to you growing up, or if….if…if….The Bible simply says that we are to honor them!

Call them, respect them, give attention to them, show them that they are appreciated.  No matter what, they gave you birth and as your parents, they are to be honored. The Bible says THEN you will have a long and full life. I wonder what will happen if we don’t? Does that mean we won’t have a long and full life? I can only imagine that to be truth. I don’t really want to find that out, do you? Let’s just do the right thing, for the right reason. Let Commandment number five be etched in our hearts and evidenced in our lives.

What does Jesus say? Let’s read from the Holy Bible and see.

Matthew 15:3-9 NKJV He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? 4 For God commanded, saying, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’ 5 But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God”— 6 then he need not honor his father or mother.’ Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition. 7 Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: 8 ‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. 9 And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ”

Pray with me please,

Father,

Holy You are and worthy to be praised. Thank You so much for the love that You have given us, Your children. You are so loving and generous. You not only love us, but You also supply us with the love that is from You (John 17:26). You help us so much Lord, through things we do not even realize You are doing at the time. We praise You and thank You for that. Lord, we ask You for Your help in keeping the 5th Commandment to honor our parents. Please speak to our hearts as to what we can do to show our love and respect for them even more. We ask that not our will be done, but Yours. Because You are awesome and when we do things Your way, we will know in our hearts that they were done right. Please give us the power and strength to humble ourselves and thereby honor You in this and all of the commandments. Thank You for continuing to draw us closer to You. We love You Lord. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

  1. I think this commandment is one that many people are troubled by, given the situation in dysfunctional families and physical/mental abuse suffered. x

    1. When given to God He alone can heal all of that. I know being a victim of child abuse and a domestic abuse survivor. I know the power of forgiveness. God doesn’t give us more than we can bear. I have been healed of all past hurts. Satan wants us to hold on. God says let it go. Blessings to you sister. ❤
