Broken, Yet Rising Above

Psalm 119:33-40 NLT Teach me your decrees, O LORD I will keep them to the end. Give me understanding and I will obey your instructions; I will put them into practice with all my heart. Make me walk along the path of your commands, for that is where my happiness is found. Give me an eagerness for your laws rather than a love for money! Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word. Reassure me of your promise, made to those who fear you. Help me abandon my shameful ways; for your regulations are good. I long to obey your commandments! Renew my life with your goodness.

Ephesians 4:31-32 NLT Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

It comes down to what satan wants vs what God wants for our lives. Satan wants to tie us up in our emotions and bring us down. Our God wants to raise us up and draw us into sweet communion with Him giving us perfect peace and love.

Worldly things that come out of Brokenness are the following:

  • Bitterness

Hebrews 12:15 calls it a root of bitterness. A root goes down deep in the soil giving water and nourishment to the rest of the plant. I would say that in order to get rid of bitterness, we have to ask the Lord to show us what offense we are holding onto. Then we can ask Him to remove it, thereby setting is free. Jesus said to forgive 70 times 7.

  • Anger

Ephesians 4:26-27 says be angry but don’t sin. Don’t let the devil have a foothold.

  • Resentment

Mark 11:25 says if we stand praying and have something against anyone forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you.

  • Hard-headed, callous

Hebrews 3:8 says don’t do it!

  • Hatred

1 John 4:20 says if a man hates his brother yet says he loves the Lord that that man is a liar. Our commandment from Jesus is to love. (Matthew 22:37-40)

  • Envy

1 Corinthians 13:4 says love doesn’t envy.

  • Deceit

1 Peter 2:1 says rid yourself of deceit and envy

  • Jealousy

Proverbs 27:4  No-one can stand before jealousy. It is a poison that goes deep in our heart feeding negativity.

Brokenness given to God will enable us to be kindhearted, tender and loving to one another.

Galatians 5:22-23 NLT But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

So how do we do it? How do we walk in the Spirit? We have to pick up God’s word. Spending time alone with Him each day will let us know what His will and way is for us. He has to be The One we turn to for direction immediately when we get hurt.

We need to face the fact that bad things sometimes happen. We have no right to hold on to offenses. I think of how we are to be like Jesus. The very word Christians means to be  Christlike. So we need to be  exemplifying Christlike behavior. Remember as Jesus was suffering, hanging on the cross, what did He say? He said, “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:24) How many times do we say that when we are hurt by someone? If we would just follow Jesus in His example. Time after time He says we are to love and forgive. So let’s do that. The next time we are offended, say Father forgive them for they don’t know what they are doing. Then ask Him to help us not to be hurt, to lay it at His feet and leave it there. Quit watering the root of bitterness and let The Great Gardener remove any root of bitterness we may have buried in our heart. When it gets uprooted, it releases us from all of its stinky fruit. Today, let’s  fill our heart and mind with the truth from God’s Word. Wouldn’t it be wonderful, when our time on earth is done, to have our Father say, “Well done thou good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of the Lord.”

Our Father,

Great and mighty are You. You hold all the power. You have all the strength and wisdom. We praise You for all that You are and all that You are doing in the lives of Your children. Thank You for drawing us closer to You. ♡

We ask You today, Lord, to reveal it to us  if we have allowed any root of bitterness in our heart towards anyone. As You reveal it to us, we ask You to remove it and replace it with more of You Lord.

Let our lives yield  the fruits of love, joy, peace, patience,  kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. We know that is possible the more we choose You over any problem or offense that happens in our lives. Today, Lord, and every day that we have left in this life, may we always choose You. In Jesus’ name we pray. With ever so much love in our hearts, Your children.
